abstract
A comprehensive review of carbon-14 dates of hearth and artefacts and other signs of human occupation from 36 sites fails to produce indisputable evidence prior to 20 000 yr BP. The Clovis culture remains the oldest unequivocal evidence for man in the Americas south of the former continental ice sheets, and dates at 11 500 to 11 000 BP.
