abstract
Reviews the present state of knowledge on soil solution DOM characteristics and present several areas of needed research in the isolation and characterization of soil solution DOM. Suggests that organic matter collected in water extracts of soil may be better analogs of soil solution DOM than aquatic DOM or alkali-extracted humic solutions. In particular, the objectives of this review are to: i) evaluate different techniques for collecting, extracting, and fractionating soil solution DOM; ii) compiled data on the characteristics of soil solution DOM; and iii) review the biogeochemistry of DOM.
