Competitive Performance of the ERCOT Wholesale Market Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • Electricity markets around the world have been restructured using a variety of market designs. Policymakers have employed different mechanisms to organize the trading of electricity, price the use of the transmission grid, signal the value of new investment, and mitigate the exercise of market power. Each of the design choices can have substantial impacts on the competitive performance of the wholesale market. This chapter provides a brief survey of the market design of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and summarizes recent evidence on the competitive performance of ERCOTs wholesale market.
