Find a Victim: Montherlant and the de Man Affair Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • During the recent debates surrounding Paul de Man's wartime journalism, several critics have attempted to counter the charge that de Man was a staunch collaborationist by noting that he published a hostile review of Henry de Montherlant's pro-collaborationist Le Solstice de juin in Le Soir on 11 November 1941. This essay challenges this thesis by showing that in the November 1941 article and in other articles published subsequently, de Man in fact approved of Montherlant's colalborationist views. Similarities in the wartime careers of the two men suggest that in the present context Montherlant is being scapegoated to exonerate de Man, who is much more firmly entrenched in the American academic community than is Montherlant.
