In late 1947 and January 1948 the literary and political review edited by Jean-Paul Sartre, Les Temps Modernes, published an expurgated version of a text entitled Vie d'une prostituee (Life of a Prostitute). Written by an anonymous "Marie-Therese," the article was one in a series on the daily lives of various individuals during the German occupation of France. In this anonymous text, the narrator told of her entrance into prostitution at the instigation of a pimp and of her efforts to escape his control; she related her prostitutional activities during the Second World War and her disgust with the jobs she was forced to take after the Liberation. Finally, she told how she was encouraged by a friend to write about her experiences.
