abstract
Religious sentiment both informs a people's political vocabulary and is informed by their vocabularies. Among other influences, the vocabulary of the American founding was naturally informed by Christian theism. Few dispute that. What this influence was on the development and understanding of American political thought and institutions, however, is a different matter. Sketching a claim to the ongoing importance of that vocabulary in understanding American civil liberties and rights is the concern of this essay.
